In the heart of the enchanting rolling meadows, lived a boy named Shepherd. His existence was unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was to tend to his herd of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the rustling of the wind across the solo tree on the hilltop were his constant companions. Day upon day, guarding his wards instilled in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.
However, there were occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. In one such instance out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plan.
Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep here had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One day he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but saw nothing threatening.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This game laughed for a couple of more days. However, one morning, a real wolf actually come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once broken, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
